Dr. Anthony “Tony” Ceraolo, a brilliant renaissance man who masterfully balanced high-horsepower drag racing and human psychology, passed away at age 84. Born in North Queensland, Australia, Tony immigrated to the United States in 1947 at age five with his parents, Sebastiana and Calogero Ceraolo. Settling in the Bronx, New York, he grew up to be a man of extraordinary depth, grit, and intellect.
To the sports world, he was the fearless independent drag racer who piloted the iconic, bright-yellow “Traveler 125” Top Fuel nitro dragster. Operating his grassroots team on a working-man’s budget, Tony routinely went toe-to-toe with the most heavily funded national operations. His legendary career was highlighted by a historic performance at the 1981 NHRA Gatornationals, where he stunned the field by clocking an all-time personal best 5.76-second qualifying run at over 246 mph.
What made Tony truly unique was the brilliant mind behind the wheel. While known at the track for having his young daughters, Kathleen and Tonia, serve proudly as his primary pit crew, Tony’s life outside the cockpit was defined by elite craftsmanship and profound academic achievement. He was a master welder and machinist who designed, built, and maintained his own racing machinery on sheer work ethic and precision.
Driven by a deep curiosity about human nature, Tony later channeled his brilliance into academics, earning a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree at Yeshiva University in the Bronx. He went on to have a long, impactful career at the New York City Board of Education, serving others through his expertise in human behavior. During this time, he met the love of his life, Janet Rivera. The two married and raised their son, Carl.
Family was at the center of Tony’s life. He devoted himself deeply to those he loved, taking his responsibilities seriously and investing in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He held strong beliefs about hard work, resilience, and reaching one’s potential. Through difficult seasons and joyful ones alike, Tony remained steadfast and fierce in his loyalty, unwavering in his convictions, and guided by high standards. He carried that same devotion into his later years, remaining a steady presence across generations.
In retirement, Tony returned to his roots by mentoring young car enthusiasts and mechanics. Generous with his time, tools, and vast knowledge, he ensured his master craftsman skills lived on. Tony proved one could possess both the grit to handle a 250-mph race car and the empathy to understand the human mind. His extraordinary engineering legacy, brilliant mechanical mind, and independent spirit now live on vibrantly through his grandsons and the next generations of his family.
Tony will be deeply missed by his dearest friend Janet, his children Kathleen DeHerrera, Tonia Gustafson, and Carl Ceraolo, his grandsons David, Alex, Joshua, and Luke, his two great-granddaughters, and generations of drag racing fans.
A wake to celebrate his extraordinary life will be held at John Dormi & Sons Bronx Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Ave., Bronx, NY, on Saturday, May 30th, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Flowers are welcome. The burial will be at Mt Hope Cemetery, 50 Jackson Ave, Hastings-On-Hudson, NY starting at 11:00 a.m.
