Evelyn Zingone, a longtime resident of the Bronx, died on August 12, 2026. She was 89.
Mrs. Zingone was born on May 16, 1937 in Coamo, Puerto Rico to the late Marcelino Guma Cortez and Dolores Rosado Guma. Education was one of the great passions of her life. For many years, she dedicated herself to teaching English as a second language to children in the public schools. She had a remarkable patience and a gentle, caring nature, always willing to give her time and encouragement to children who needed extra help. She believed deeply in the importance of education and understood that a teacher could make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
Her love of teaching extended beyond the classroom. She also had the privilege of teaching Spanish to priests at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, sharing her knowledge and love of language with the same kindness and enthusiasm that she brought to everything she did.
She also had a deep love for nature and found great joy and peace in her flower garden. She was especially passionate about her roses, taking great pride in nurturing them and watching them bloom. Her garden was a reflection of her—beautiful, patient, and full of life. She found happiness in the simple beauty of nature and took pleasure in sharing that beauty with those around her.
She is survived by her husband, Nicholas Zingone; her children, Ricardo Zingone, Eva Zingone, Nicholas Zingone, and Mary Zingone-Walker; her grandchildren, Erica Zingone, Jennifer Zingone, Ariel Zingone, and Michael Zingone; her sister, Alicia Veliz; her brother-in-law, Luis Veliz; and many nieces and nephews .
Visiting will be Sunday, August 16 from 4-8pm at John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 17 at 10am at St. Raymond’s Church, Castle Hill and East Tremont Avenues, Bronx. Entombment will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery, 2600 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx.
