Joseph D. Nohavicka
March 16, 1936 – March 29, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph D. Nohavicka (Sonny), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. Joseph passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and cherished memories. He was a man who lived life to the fullest, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Marie, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage filled with love and laughter. Together, they raised five children: Joseph D. Nohavicka (Kris Nohavicka), James R. Nohavicka (Anna Nohavicka), Ken Nohavicka (Catherine Nohavicka), Kim Nohavicka (Richard DeGasperis), and Kyle Nohavicka (Sharon Sanchez).  He was a proud and adoring grandfather (Pap) to Joseph NohavickaKelsey NohavickaJames N. NohavickaAlan CookeJessica NohavickaKenneth Nohavicka, and Alexa Nohavicka. His great-grandchildren, Joseph and McKayla Nohavicka, were the light of his later years. Joseph is also survived by his cousin Pammy, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.

Joseph was born and raised in West Newton, PA, and carried the small-town charm and values with him throughout his life. A proud veteran, Joseph served in the National Guard and later spent over 30 years with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), where he was known for his dedication, courage, and sense of humor. While working at the fire department, Joseph’s other passion was working as a travel agent, where he continued to share his love for travel and helping others explore the world. His passion for travel was a defining characteristic, and he was known as a world traveler, always seeking new adventures and experiences. He was known as “Joe on the Go!”

A man of many talents and hobbies, Joseph was an avid softball player, often playing with the guys from the fire department, and an organizer of events at work, where his quick wit and charismatic personality made him a beloved figure. He was the life of the party, always ready with a joke or a funny story that would bring smiles to everyone around him. Joseph was known for his gift of gab, and he continuously created personalized ditties for those around him—making everyone feel special in his own unique way.

Joseph had a deep love for his family, and the “Family Vacations” were something he looked forward to always. He enjoyed driving hours to take his family on road trips to PA, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Joseph was also a huge sports fan, always rooting for his grandchildren’s college teams (Mercy, SUNY Purchase, University at Buffalo, Duke, SUNY New Paltz, and Syracuse). He loved to watch basketball and football, cheering on the underdog and celebrating the victories of his grandchildren’s schools.

In his later years, Joseph found joy in spending time in Murrells Inlet, SC, where he loved the peaceful surroundings and the chance to relax with his wife. He was a dedicated runner, always staying active and pushing himself to be his best. Joseph had a love for going out to eat, especially at his favorite restaurant, “Pasta Pasta”, and was always on the lookout for the best deals, whether at a restaurant or during his travels. He was also known for his ability to negotiate special perks and giveaways at Sandals Resorts, which brought him much joy, along with his extensive collection of sandals.

Joseph’s love for life was evident in everything he did—from his meticulous organization and attention to detail to the way he connected with others through his humor, his stories, and his laughter. He had a special knack for making people feel at ease, and his legacy of kindness, generosity, and humor will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

As a tribute to his legacy, his family shares this poem that captures the essence of who he was:

Pap, the Legend

Pap, with his jokes and laughter so bright,
A twinkle in his eye, a heart full of light.
Retired firefighter, brave and bold,
With stories of courage, never growing old.

A father of five, his love runs deep,
A family so cherished, memories to keep.
Sixty-six years, a marriage so sweet,
Side by side, their hearts still beat.

He’s a runner at heart, quick on his feet,
Whether for miles or just down the street.
A saver of pennies, a spender of time,
With memories of West Newton etched in rhyme.

He’d speak with a twang, rich and sincere,
A small-town boy with a voice we hold dear.
Loving old movies, the classics he’d find,
With a chuckle and smile, he’d rewind and rewind.

Pap loves to travel, with stories to share,
From faraway places to moments rare.
A charismatic man, full of grace,
With laughter and love in every embrace.

So here’s to Pap, a legend, a guide,
With humor and heart, he’s always beside.
A life well-lived, with family and fun,
In the race of life, Pap’s already won.

Visiting will be Wednesday, April 2, 2025 from 4-8pm at John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Joseph will be remembered in a celebration of life service on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 10:00am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 1703 Lurting Avenue, Bronx. Interment will be private.

Joseph Nohavicka’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his kindness, wit, and infectious joy. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived, and he will be dearly missed.

Our deepest sympathy for you, Marie and the family. As kids, I always loved when I would see a car with New York license plates in front of Aunt Mary’s house. Sonny always seemed so upbeat and happy. And a beautiful smile. Our prayers are with you all.

Our Prayers and Deepest Sympathy to you, Marie, and the entire family. Sonny was certainly legendary, always in a cheerful (and sometimes “ornery”) mood. His smile was infectious. We have so many cherished memories of his visits to West Newton. With our Love, Sonny — and to Marie and the entire family. God Bless You.
