David Melendez was a loving family man and a loyal friend. He is survived by his wife, who is his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Monica Melendez, and their four children, Makenzie, Savannah, David Jr. and Sa’Myah. David was born in the year 1981 on October 24th – the same day as his grandmother and prayer warrior, Mama Luz – and he died on March 9, 2021. David grew up in a large family of 8 siblings he shared deep bonds with: Cynthia, Daniel, Anthony, Nilsa, Jose, Jasmine, Stephanie and Rosa, under their incredible single mother: Nidia Santiago. He loved his many nieces and nephews: Jonmel, Raumel, Ciara, Alinah, Andre, Jay Lynn, Jaden, Jose Jr. and Ruby and his great-nephew Aiden. David was also survived by his in-laws Andre Paul, Ryan Ruiz, La Toya Santiago, and his two surviving uncles, Albert, Oscar and Jose D. Melendez – the only surviving uncle on his father’s side. He joins his sister Nilsa and his cousin Polo who are resting in peace. Even without a father to model the role properly, David was an exemplary father and husband – the provider and protector of his family. He was a successful entrepreneur who was well loved and respected by the communities he served. He and his business partners, best friends, and unbiological brothers Chino and Edot had a long-lasting and loyal partnership, friendship and brotherly bond. He loved his high school friends from Hawthorne Cedar Knolls and the feeling is mutual.
David was funny, charismatic, ambitious and powerful. He was the life of any party and never missed an opportunity to gather with loved ones. He fiercely protected his daughters, who were daddy’s girls and honored his son, who is his reflection. He was a constant presence in the audience of his brother Jose’s rap battle competitions and enjoyed crafting his own rap verses. He consistently visited and spent time with siblings, recently driving his entire family all the way to Missouri to visit his brother Anthony for his birthday. David will be deeply missed.
