Edward Francis Spangenberg, a lifelong resident of the Bronx, died on September 15, 2024 in his home where he lived for 65 years. He was 78 years old.
Mr. Spangenberg was born in the Bronx on June 1, 1946 to the late Edward Spangenberg Sr. and Mary Gruner. He was a Marine who served in Vietnam and a retired supervisor from the United States Postal Service.
He is not only survived by his loving daughter Diana M. Spangenberg, his two cats Sweetie Pie and Tinker Bell, but by all the beautiful families that adopted him as a God-father, Grandpa, Dad, Uncle and Brother; The Lopez-Cartagena-Vasquez Family, the Rodriguez-Rivera Family, the Vasquez-Guzman Family, the McCormack Family and the Shockness Family to name a few. He is also survived by his adored lifelong neighbors.
Eddie or Mr. Ed as he was affectionately nicknamed, was a responsible and loyal man; a true rule follower, instruction book reader, straight line walker, a creature of habit and a loving soul. He was always willing to offer a helping hand and worried about others more than himself. He was an amiable neighbor and true friend. He loved kids and always let his inner child shine thru.
His passion was caring for and rescuing stray cats. He would not only feed them daily, but he also took them to the vet and tried to find them forever homes. Their new families would get an “Eddie Care Package” including a bed, litter box and food.
He always took care of his elderly neighbors and never missed a coffee klatch. If he wasn’t programming a neighbor’s phone for emergency numbers for their family, he was waving a neighbor off to work wishing them a good day from his porch. He was a true neighborhood staple.
The world knew Eddie as Diana’s Dad. He loved Diana with all his heart and everyone knew it. Diana is a New York City First Grade Detective in NYPD and Eddie couldn’t have been any prouder. He made sure he told everyone. He supported her through her tenure in the NYPD; with special attention to making sure her uniforms were always freshly pressed, her collar brass was on straight and her boots were perfectly shined. He took pride that his daughter always looked sharp in her uniform. He LOVED the NYPD.
He loved all animals, live music, Do-op, Elvis Presley, Broadway shows, Blue Bloods, a really good meal with family and never missed coffee and dessert. EVER. He always had Hershey Kisses or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on hand to fill your sweet tooth.
Eddie lived a simple life, but it was a rich and full life, filled with wonderful memories of great times had.
Eddie was a dedicated and loving father, a committed and proud citizen, and a companionate and thoughtful neighbor.
He lived life knowing doing good consistently and doing good for those in need is the least we could do.
He cared deeply.
We will miss Eddie very much and will forever be thankful for his life.
“May each tear and fond memory be a note of love rising to meet you.”
May you rest in peace in Christ.
