Sara Bengochea, a longtime resident of the Bronx, died on January 29, 2025. She was 86.

Ms. Bengochea was born on June 17, 1938 in Quebradas, a picturesque neighborhood in the town of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico to the late Sergio and Dominga (Rodriquez) Bengochea. She graduated from high school in 1957 and  then studied for 2 years to be a secretary in Ponce. She moved to New York City where she studied for 2 years at Lehman College while working in a factory distributing materials for the “Army”. She also worked as an advisor at the Puerto Rican Project and for several years as an activist for the Puerto Rican community, working with politicians in the fight for the well-being and betterment of Hispanics in New York. She worked at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan until her retirement. She was a proud member of Encuentro Guyanillense de NY, an organization honoring pride and community from her hometown of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. The organization recognized her as the Honored Mother of Year in 2007 and as Guayanillense of the Year in 2015.

She is survived by her daughter Sara Pagan; her grandsons, Jonathan Oumadatt and Ernesto Arroyo III; her granddaughter, Kathiria Arroyo; and her brother Enrique Bengochea from her hometown of Guayanilla.

Visiting will be Saturday from 4-8pm at Joseph A. Lucchese Funeral Home, 726 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10am at Our Lady of Solace Church, 731 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Interment will be private.
