Carmen Maria Nieves, a longtime resident of the Bronx, died on December 28, 2024. She was 100.

Mrs. Nieves was born on March 7, 1924 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to the late Confessor Nieves and Maria Calcano. For many years before her retirement she worked as a hairdressing chemist.

Visiting will be Thursday from 4-8pm at Joseph A. Lucchese Funeral Home, 726 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9am with the interment following at St. Raymond’s Cemetery, 2600 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx.

    My mother, Millie, is in her 80’s, and she will miss her beloved best friend in the building. Hearing Carmen’s herstory of having been in the military as a young woman out of Puerto Rico, arriving to New York, and living the changes of the building for 50 years were an honor to witness.
    Doña Carmen was a strong and elegant woman, and a sisterfriend to my mother.
