Julio Juan Colon, 78, passed away after a brief battle against illness on July 24th, 2026, at Montefiore Hospital.
Julio was born in Puerto Rico in the town of Santa Isabel on May 5th, 1948, to the late Luis Guillermo and Aida Maria. Eventually, he would make his way to New York at a young age, mixing it up on the streets of Spanish Harlem while making a life for himself and his dear mother, Mami Aida. During his wild teenage years, and despite many admirers, he would eventually settle down with the love of his life, Evelyn, and against many odds, they started a life together. Despite the hard road it was to raise a family in the heart of the South Bronx, Julio was a hardworking man who never once let those around him suffer for anything. He made sure there was always food on the table and that his children would never think about how things could be because they were always happy with how things were. Julio was a loving husband and father who was always easy to talk to, always ready to help or fix anything, and always, always, the coolest person in any room.
Julio is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn, and his three children, Julio Jr, Dennis, and Yasmin. Julio will always be remembered by those he touched with his wit and laughter and his rare combination of love and toughness. He was a good man, gone much too soon, and our world is the lesser for it.
Family and friends can attend a service in Julio’s honor at John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Avenue in the Bronx on Thursday July 30th from 4-8pm.

My deepest condolences to all of the Colón Family Tree on their loss. I had the pleasure to know “Mr. Colón” for 42 years. He was my dear friend, Dennis’ father, and one of the father figures in my life that was always there to deliver sage advice and guidance, even when I didn’t know I needed it. He was a true examples of an admirable Man of Color — loving, responsible, and present. The world has lost a source of light, but I know he’s looking down on all of us (with MY dad), making sure we’re okay, and preparing us a seat next to him for when it’s our turn to see him again. No words could describe how much Mr. Colon meant to ALL of us in the mini building! He was our protector for the ten years I was Assistant Principal there. He was so kind to the youngest children and to the staff! He adored his wife and family! We had many wonderful chats and I’ll always cherish our time together! He absolutely left us too soon! My deepest condolences to the Colón family. I have known Dennis for 40+ years, and as much as he was a constant in my life, so was his father — Pops. I fondly remember that he always had jokes when he saw Dennis’ friends (particularly me). That was the way he showed his love. He was a big part of what made my childhood amazing. I knew that besides my own Dad, when I was out and about, Pops was looking out for me.
The world is dimmer with his passing, but I know that he’s looking out for us all.
