Matthew “Matty” Attinello, a lifelong resident of the Bronx, passed away on July 27th 2026 at the age of 96. He was born to the late Frances & Matteo Attinello.
Matty was married to his childhood sweetheart, Dee, for over 70 years. His unwavering love and care for Dee during her long illness was testimony to the type of husband he was.
Matty is survived by his daughters, Dolores & Roseann, and their husbands, Paul and Roy.
Matty was pre-deceased by his older sister, Frances & his brother-in-law, Lou and his younger brother, John & his sister-in-law, Helen. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews and cousins.
Matty leaves behind his five grandchildren: Paul Matthew & his wife, Janice; Jennifer; Anthony & his wife, Suhlail; James & his wife, Samira; and Samantha & her husband, Alex.
Matty also was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Christian, Gabriella, Mateo, Leandro and Luca. Spending time and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and reading to them were the greatest joys of his life. Matty was always interested in what activities they were involved in and how well they were doing in school. Having a good education was of paramount importance to him.
Matty believed in “family first” and the recognition of all milestones, whether big or small. We all have countless memories of parties and celebrations with him.
Matty was a Korean War Vet and served his country for two years. He was an active member of the American Legion, attending meetings in his younger years and always supporting their mission. Matty worked in construction as a sheet metal foreman for 40 years. He was very well respected in this field and well liked by his employees.
Matty was deeply committed to his Catholic faith and was an excellent role model. He instilled in his family the values of faith, hope and love.
Matty also cherished his friends and always made time to get together with them. He was the first one his friends would call whether it was for his sage advice or help with a home do-it-yourself project.
Matty was an avid sports fan. He loved the NY Giants and the NY Yankees. He was a Giants’ season ticket holder in his younger days and went to all the New York games. Matty also loved the Yankees from the time he was a teenager and religiously watched all the games on TV. Matty also played golf in his retirement.
Matty was the strong and silent type who always shared his life lessons with his family. Matty has left a lasting legacy of love, commitment and values for all his family and friends to emulate.
Visiting will be Sunday, August 2 from 4-8pm at John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 3 at 11am at St. Clare’s Church, 1918 Paulding Avenue, Bronx. Entombment will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery, 2800 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to the American Heart Association.
The Conte family has had the pleasure of knowing Matty and Dee Attinello since 1978 when I met their daughter Dolores on Morris Park Avenue as a first time mother. She was wheeling her son ,and I was doing the same with my daughter. One fond memory I have is of Matty opening up his home on Fowler Avenue where he set up a small pool for the kids to splash and cool off. That’s when I found out that he loved humidity and hot weather, because it soothed his back pain. The funny thing was that he worked with sheet metal installing air conditioning , but did not care for it! His happiness revolved around his family and friends especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren , and we spent many special days with him celebrating one or another of those grandchildren’s accomplishments. He will be missed, but I am sure he is celebrating with Dee and all those family members and friends who have gone before him. Rest in peace Mr. Attinello.
