Miguel Angel Berenguer passed away on October 11, 2021, at the age of 78. He died of complications due to a heart attack and hypoglycemia.
Miguel was born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico on September 29th, 1943 to Leonides Rosario and Hector Berenguer, also of Puerto Rican descent.
In 1965, Miguel enlisted in the army and served in Germany for two years. He was an expert in rifle and earned a National Defense Service Medal. He was headed to Vietnam however due to a knee injury, he was honorably discharged in 1967. He married MaryAnn Guarente in 1969 and went on to have 3 children. They bought a house on Haight Avenue and made many happy memories there.
Miguel was a master carpenter by trade and worked throughout NYC in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He was very proud to have contributed in building many of the automated teller machine kiosks for Citibank. If you ever took money out of a Citibank ATM in the 90’s in NYC… chances are you probably encountered his handiwork. He retired in 2001 and continued to use his carpentry skills on independent projects for family, friends and neighbors.
Miguel was a smart, hard working and caring man who loved his family. He was always willing to help out someone in need … whether it was fixing a flat tire or a drive to the airport. Miguel was someone you could count on. He had many interests/ collections and was very passionate when he spoke of his hobbies. He loved Lionel trains, cars, tools, movies, music and football. He also loved to gamble and fly kites.
Miguel is predeceased by his spouse of 43 years, MaryAnn. He is survived by his brother Hector Berenguer of Florida and his sister Miriam Rivera of the Bronx. He is also survived by his children Anna and her husband Shawn, Miguel Jr., Andrew and his expectant wife Stephanie. He was a proud and loving grandpa to Sarah, Madison and Mackenzie. As well as a wonderful father, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend.
Visiting will be Thursday from 4-9pm at John Dormi & Sons Funeral Home, 1121 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. Family and friends wishing to attend the visitation virtually may do so by clicking the following link at any time during the visiting Berenguer Visitation Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 1703 Lurting Avenue, Bronx. Interment will follow at Rose Hills Cemetery, 101 Mill Street, Putnam Valley.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Children’s Diabetes Foundation or the National Audubon Society . Miguel loved eagles and struggled with diabetes throughout most of his life.
